RUMTUM

RUMTUM is the project of John Hastings, a Denver-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist who grew up in Ohio and moved to Colorado in 2011. The music is built from chopped samples, saturated synths, hypnotic loops and organic percussion, sitting between downtempo, electronica, IDM and midtempo club music. Hastings has said he set out to make records he would want in his own headphones on a walk rather than material aimed at an audience, and he learned modular synthesis from a roommate who worked for the Denver synthesizer builder WMD. Early releases came out on Lefse, Gold Robot, Wax Thematique and Bastard Jazz; more recent work has appeared on Anjunachill. The catalog is long and steady, running from Coasting and MR&RT (2012) and Mystic Wonders (2013) through YESOD (2014), Mora Tuga (2016), Good Places (2017), Mirage and Shade Fader (2020), Borealis, Gold Splash and Tropic Air (2021), Isles in Indigo and Strawberry Moon (2022), Arcadian Daze (2023), Chroma Bloom and Metrics in Time (2024), and Glue of Everything and Floating Cactus (2025). He has collaborated repeatedly with the producer Monster Rally, the project of Ted Feighan, a childhood friend from the same Ohio lakeside town. Hastings works as a muralist and painter alongside the music: he released Glue of Everything as a six-month sequence of monthly singles, each paired with an original painting, animation, mural or video, and a related exhibition and listening party at the Novel building in Denver's RiNo district showed three large canvases tied to album tracks. He has opened Denver-area dates for RJD2, Shigeto and Thundercat.
