DJ Swingsett is a Denver-based DJ and producer working in soulful jazzy deep house, broken beat and jungle. He left Colorado for New York at 21 to pursue music, journalism and DJ culture, and was a full-time DJ in New York and Brooklyn from 1992 to 2007, holding residencies at city venues from 1993 onward and becoming the first American DJ invited as a special guest at London's long-running That's How It Is night. His first record appeared on Ubiquity Records in 1995, and he has since worked with Om Records, Sirkus in the UK, Dope on Plastic! and EastWest in Germany, co-producing official remixes for Whodini, Twilight Circus Dub Sound System, The Streets and Billie Holiday alongside collaborators including J. Warrin and Takuya Nakamura. With John Warrin and vocalist Lisa Shaw he co-founded three labels: Ism Records for broken beat and downtempo, Esho Recordings for deep soulful jazzy house, and Ism'assive Records for jungle and drum and bass. He has performed across the United States, Canada, the UK and Europe, and spent two years teaching English in South Korea while DJing in Seoul, Tokyo and Bangkok. He is a member of the Zulu Nation and a disabled veteran, and names Billie Holiday, Lonnie Liston Smith, James Brown's JBs, the Mizell Brothers, DJ Premier and Joaquin Joe Claussell among his touchstones. He has broadcast on Boulder community station KGNU since March 2015, hosting Afternoon Sound Alternative on third Fridays and occasional Saturday-night Electronic Air shows, after earlier mix-show runs on Dub Palace, Dusty Grooves and Sound Lab. In November 2025 Inner Tribe Records reissued his and J. Warrin's early-2000s track Doesn't Make It Right, featuring Lisa Shaw, on digital and limited 12-inch vinyl with remixes from Kid Sublime, Steve Spacek and Inkswel & Reggie B.
