Hollywood Undead is an American rap rock and nu metal band formed in Los Angeles in 2005, growing out of songs that Aron Erlichman and Jorel Decker posted to Myspace and that drew a following large enough to build a group around. Its five members perform under pseudonyms, Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog, Charlie Scene, Funny Man and Danny, and have historically worn individually designed stage masks, most of them modelled on the hockey goaltender design. The sound sets rapped verses and several rotating lead vocalists against distorted guitars, with industrial and hip-hop production sitting alongside rock arrangements, and the lyrics swing between party material and darker, more confessional writing. The debut album, Swan Songs, was released in September 2008 on A&M/Octone; it peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200, spent well over a year on that chart, was certified gold by the RIAA in 2009 and reached platinum in 2013. Founding vocalist Deuce, Erlichman, left in 2010 over creative differences and was replaced as the band's clean singer by Danny. American Tragedy followed in 2011, then Notes from the Underground in 2013 and Day of the Dead in 2015. Percussionist Da Kurlzz, Matthew Busek, departed in 2017, the year the band released Five, its first record for its own Dove & Grenade Media imprint in partnership with BMG. New Empire, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 both arrived in 2020, followed by Hotel Kalifornia in 2022. Over its career the group has worked with MDDN, Interscope, A&M/Octone, Polydor, BMG and Sumerian Records. Hollywood Undead tours steadily, playing mid-size clubs, theatres and festivals across North America and Europe.
