Fleshwater

alternative metal · post-hardcore · shoegaze

Fleshwater is an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 2017 as an offshoot of the hardcore group Vein.fm. Vocalist and guitarist Anthony DiDio started the project with drummer Matt Wood, who played with the band until 2023, and they were later joined by another Vein.fm member, bassist Jeremy Martin. The current lineup pairs DiDio with Marisa Shirar, who sings and plays guitar, keyboards and sampler, alongside Martin on bass, Jonathan Lhaubouet on guitar and Josian Ramos on drums and percussion. DiDio and Shirar trade and stack lead vocals, which is the clearest break from the harsher music of the parent band. The group's sound leans on nineteen-nineties alternative rock and shoegaze reference points, and writers have reached for terms such as soft grunge, nu-gaze and grungegaze to describe it; the band has cited Sunny Day Real Estate, Dinosaur Jr. and Hum among its influences. After an early release, demo2020, in February 2020, Fleshwater issued its debut album We're Not Here to Be Loved in November 2022 on Closed Casket Activities. The EP Sounds of Grieving followed in December 2023, and a second album, 2000: In Search of the Endless Sky, arrived in September 2025, again on Closed Casket Activities. Singles across the two records include Kiss the Ladder, The Razor's Apple, Standalone, Jetpack and Last Escape. The band's profile grew considerably in 2025: it supported Deftones and The Mars Volta on a North American tour between February and April of that year, then announced its own headlining fall tour beginning in September, which has carried it into clubs such as The Underground in Charlotte, North Carolina.
