Caleb Elliott

Caleb Elliott is a singer-songwriter, cellist and multi-instrumentalist from Natchitoches, Louisiana, now based in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He grew up in a church household, his father a pastor and his mother the congregation's pianist, and took up classical cello as a child, an unusual grounding for a musician who now works mainly in Southern soul and roots rock. He released a first EP of original songs in 2012 while playing covers gigs through college in Lafayette, and moved to the Shoals in 2014 at the urging of the songwriter Dylan LeBlanc, becoming a fixture of the area's studio scene as a cellist, arranger and sideman. His solo debut, Forever to Fade, was released in 2019 by Single Lock Records, the Florence, Alabama label co-founded by John Paul White and Ben Tanner. Weed, Wine & Time followed on 14 April 2023 as the first release of Single Lock's tenth year; the eleven-song record was produced by Elliott with Ben Tanner, recorded and mixed at Sun Drop Sound with engineering by Tanner and Austin Motlow, and mastered by Adam Grover at Sterling Sound. Writers have placed it between the loose country-blues of JJ Cale, the soul-jazz of Michael Kiwanuka and the lyrical fragility of Sufjan Stevens. As a session player Elliott has contributed cello and string arrangements for Nicole Atkins, John Paul White, Maggie Rose, members of Alabama Shakes and Cedric Burnside, whose Grammy-winning I Be Trying carries his playing. He holds writing credits on Mary Gauthier's Thank God for You and on Billy Allen + The Pollies' It's Okay, used as the theme for the Netflix series The Madness, and his own recordings have appeared in Showtime's Shameless and Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again. Recent singles include I Don't Believe You and Slow Burn.
